FormulaCheckout Abandonment = (Started checkouts − Orders) ÷ Started checkouts × 100
Checkout Abandonment Rate measures the share of users who start the checkout process but do not reach order confirmation.
How it works
It is more specific than cart abandonment because it focuses on users with stronger purchase intent. Step-level analysis can identify where errors, hesitation or exits increase.
Practical example
If 500 users start checkout and 350 complete the order, 150 abandon it: checkout abandonment is 30%.
Why it matters
Reducing this leakage can have an immediate impact because it affects users already close to conversion. Payments, login, address forms and shipping costs are common areas to investigate.
What to watch
Looking only at the overall rate can hide specific issues. It is better to measure each step and segment at least by device and payment method.
