Average Order Value: 10 modi per aumentare lo scontrino medio senza distruggere il margine

AOV looks like an easy eCommerce lever: get customers who are already buying to put a little more in the basket. The catch is that many AOV tactics raise revenue per order while quietly giving away margin.

The better question is not “How do I make shoppers spend more?” It is “How do I increase the economic value of the order without creating friction or unnecessary discounting?”

In short

  • Goal:understand when average order value changes a business decision, not just a dashboard number.
  • Signals to read together:AOV and Units per transaction.
  • Mistake to avoid:The threshold that lifts AOV the most may not be the best threshold.

What it actually means

AOV equals revenue divided by orders. It does not tell you whether the order is better. Pair it with contribution margin, units per transaction, return rate and conversion rate.

10 areas to control

  1. Complementary bundles. Build combinations that solve a real shopper need and reduce decision effort.
  2. Contextual cross-sell. Recommend compatible products at the right moment; relevance matters more than quantity.
  3. Data-based shipping threshold. Start from order distribution and fulfillment economics, not an arbitrary number.
  4. Multipacks and quantity breaks. For replenishable products they can increase units per order, but check future-order cannibalization.
  5. Merchandise for complementarity. Use purchase affinity and contribution, not only best sellers.
  6. Make the upgrade obvious. A higher-priced option should make incremental value immediately clear.
  7. Paid value-added services. Gift wrap, personalization or premium delivery can add value without discounting merchandise.
  8. Segment incentives by economics. An incentive can work on high-margin categories and destroy value on low-margin ones.
  9. Controlled post-purchase offer. Can add value without interrupting checkout when payment and fulfillment support it.
  10. Measure value per session. If AOV rises while conversion falls, revenue or contribution per session can deteriorate.

KPIs to monitor

KPIWhy it matters
AOVMeasures revenue per order.
Units per transactionShows whether the basket is expanding.
Contribution per orderChecks true order economics.
Contribution per sessionBalances AOV and conversion.

Turn the recommendation into a decision

The fastest way to avoid a false conclusion is to turn the recommendation into a test with one precise question. For average order value, useComplementary bundlesas the first axis: Build combinations that solve a real shopper need and reduce decision effort. Pair it withContextual cross-sell: Recommend compatible products at the right moment; relevance matters more than quantity. The two signals should tell a compatible story. Foraverage order value, divergence between the two signals is useful evidence about where to investigate before rolling the change out.

To avoid a partial read ofaverage order value, add a control from a different part of the system.Data-based shipping thresholdmatters because start from order distribution and fulfillment economics, not an arbitrary number.Multipacks and quantity breakshelps check whether the effect remains coherent as context changes: For replenishable products they can increase units per order, but check future-order cannibalization. In aaverage order valuetest, avoid changing price, creative, targeting, UX and promotion at the same time. Theaverage order valueoutcome may improve, but simultaneous changes make the contribution of each lever impossible to isolate.

The final read ofaverage order valueneeds at least two economic or operational guardrails.AOVmatters because measures revenue per order.Units per transactionmatters because shows whether the basket is expanding. Ifaverage order valuelifts the headline KPI while either guardrail deteriorates materially, you do not yet have a scalable solution; you have a trade-off that needs to be priced.

Finish theaverage order valuetest with a decision rule written before you inspect the result. For average order value, three questions are enough: did the original problem shrink, is the benefit still visible in the economically relevant segment, and does it survive after subtracting discounts, returns, operating cost or demand that would have happened anyway? Applied toaverage order value, that discipline turns a tactic into operating knowledge instead of promoting a one-week correlation into a permanent rule.

  • Where should you look first?Map AOV distribution by category and customer segment.
  • What should you isolate?Identify complementary items with enough margin and availability.
  • When should you scale?Only after this step is also validated: Test one lever at a time: bundle, threshold, cross-sell or upsell.

The point teams often miss

The threshold that lifts AOV the most may not be the best threshold. If shoppers add a low-margin item to earn an expensive incentive, basket value rises while contribution does not. Test contribution per order and per session.

Operational checklist

  1. Map AOV distribution by category and customer segment.
  2. Identify complementary items with enough margin and availability.
  3. Test one lever at a time: bundle, threshold, cross-sell or upsell.
  4. Measure AOV, conversion, margin and returns in the same experiment.
  5. Keep the tactic only if value per session improves, not just basket size.
